GR 139
The Gran Canaria World Heritage hiking trail GR-138
follows traditional pathways which link up with each other
through the unique space of the Risco Caído and the
Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria Cultural Landscape.
Although it has gradually seen a fall in its functional use,
over time this heritage legacy, an integral part of the
cultural identity of our island, has led to the enrichment of
its heritage value as a display of the survival of the native
footprint on the territory.
Gran Canaria is a continent in miniature with an assort-
ment of very unusual landscapes, in the middle of an
enormously diverse archipelago. It was with the intention
of improving use of the resources, harnessing synergies
between the local population and the people visiting it,
and enjoying a unique experience in the midst of the
nature and cultural values of the zones it passes through,
that the GR-139 Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve came
into being.

Hostel
The Degollada de Becerra Visitors’ Centre has a hostel
which oers overnight stay of one night for hikers,
research personnel and star gazers who want to explore
the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve.
The hostel is designed to provide a comfortable and
welcoming experience, with various shared-use rooms.
The hostel also oers additional services such as chang-
ing rooms, access to hot water showers, and outside
areas to enjoy the natural landscape.
Starlight Tourist Destination
Starlight Tourist Destinations are visitable places which
enjoy excellent conditions for gazing at the starry skies
and which, since they are protected from light pollution,
are especially suitable for carrying out activities based in
the skyscape.
In 2018, the area covered by the Gran Canaria Biosphere
Reserve was given “Starlight Tourist Destination” accred-
itation, highlighting Gran Canaria as one of the best
places in the world for gazing at the night sky.
For its part, the Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of
Gran Canaria Cultural Landscape cannot be disconnect-
ed from the sky; the sky is an integral and inseparable
part of the earth which has given rise to displays of the
sacred in the stars. It is the place inhabited by spiritual
entities or where they are to be found - deities, but also
the stage on which happenings or events which are
relevant for the island’s first populations played out.
Multi-purpose Room
A space to get to know about Gran Canaria
Lodging between the paths
A unique landscape has the starring role
Contemplate the night sky from high above
A space designed for contemplation, enjoyment and under-
standing of the surroundings.
Its aim is to oer visitors a vision of the evolution of this land-
scape, of themed interpretative panels and audiovisual
sections, as well as to organise activities such as workshops,
training days and other events focusing on the geology and
astronomy of this place.
The Visitors’ Centre oers guided visits to introduce visitors
to the content on display in the multi-purpose room, along-
side the rest of material and immaterial elements which
make up part of the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve Cultur-
al Heritage.
Viewpoint
Located on the border between the municipalities of Vega de
San Mateo and Tejeda, in the heart of Gran Canaria, this
enclave oers one of the most spectacular panoramic views
on the island, allowing visitors to contemplate its unique
geography, marked by impressive natural formations.
Outstanding among these formations are two majestic mono-
liths, witness to the geological and cultural evolution of the
island over the millennia: Nublo Rock and Bentayga Rock.
The immensity of the Tejeda basin can be appreciated from
this viewpoint; a geological depression which reveals the
eect of thousands of years of erosion on the ancient volcanic
structure which gave the island its origin.
